In 1986, Ukraine suffered the worst nuclear accident in history at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. A reactor went out of control during a test at low power, which led to an explosion and fire that destroyed the reactor building and released large amounts of radiation into the atmosphere. The residents of Pripyat, the industrial town nearby, were relocated as their homes were no longer safe to live in, and Pripyat has been empty ever since.
In 2020 and 2021, we went to photograph and experience this unique location.
